Editing Services: Thoughts on Reedsy

Over the course of my career as a copyeditor and proofreader, I have worked for a variety of editing platforms that specialize in connecting clients with editors. Working for many of these companies was a good experience and improved my skillset and confidence as an early editor. Other companies were less worthwhile, and ultimately I moved on to more independent work, with the exception of one platform: Reedsy.

Unlike some of the other companies I’ve worked with, Reedsy takes a relatively hands-off approach, serving as a marketplace and mediator to connect clients with editors, who are themselves responsible for making offers and setting rates. This flexibility is what makes the platform so appealing. It can be frustratingly difficult to find clients through independent advertising on the web, and the anonymity of the internet can make establishing trust in early client–editor relationships difficult. Reedsy solves all of this by serving as a space where clients and editors can meet and negotiate, with a trustworthy company to step in as a third party if need be.

It took some time before I was accepted to Reedsy, as they wanted a high level of experience, and it took a while for me to land my first client. Once I did, however, the process was as smooth as one could hope. All communication took place through the Reedsy platform, which was a breeze to use, and all billing was handled for me once the initial offer was accepted. Overall, I certainly plan to continue using Reedsy and recommend it for copyeditors and proofreaders looking to grow their business and establish themselves in their field, as well as for writers in need of editing or proofreading services.
